About Us

The Center For Student Legal Services is a law office for Ohio University students. We are a non-profit legal assistance program that is completely funded by an $8.00 fee, which is included as an option on students’ quarterly tuition bill. We staff two full time licensed attorneys to assist students with legal issues in every capacity from legal advice and information to representation in Athens courts. We have been protecting, asserting, and defending student rights since 1997.

The main issues impacting students at Ohio University are housing and criminal issues (misdemeanors involving alcohol, minor drug violations, etc). Other student-based issues concern consumer, employment problems, fraud, debt and other civil issues. We also have notary services, review contracts and have trained mediators to mediate situations where legal action could be avoided.

The students of Ohio University are very fortunate to have access to quality low cost legal services; only a few hundred colleges and universities in the U.S. offer this kind of service to college students. Even if you think you will never need an attorney, it’s worth paying your fee just in case you need us. You don’t have to be “in trouble” to need an attorney; many students use our notary and mediation services or have leases or other legal contracts reviewed by our attorneys.

Paying your $8.00 legal services fee is worth the money, not only because it gives you access to an attorney for a fraction of the cost for a local attorney, but it also helps make our organization better for all Ohio University students.
